On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 12:18 am, Turlock Police Officer Khounlivong made a traffic stop at Crane Ave and S Thor St.
Officer Khounlivong had been flagged down by a witness and advised of a possible drunk driver leaving Staley’s Club. He then located and stopped the vehicle.
The vehicle’s two occupants were identified as Jose Azevedo, 41, of Turlock, and Lara Zirak, 52, of Turlock. Azevedo was the driver, and he was discovered to be on probation for child abuse or endangerment.
While speaking with Azevedo, Officer Khounlivong noticed that he displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. Based on the totality of the circumstances, Officer Khounlivong determined Azevedo was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.
Additionally, Zirak displayed similar symptoms and made suicidal comments. She, too, was arrested as she was unable to care for herself.
Azevedo was issued a driver’s license suspension order and chose to provide a blood sample for his chemical test, so he was transported to Doctors Medical Center, where that was facilitated.
Azevedo and Zirak were both booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, Azevedo for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or greater, and Zirak for disorderly conduct.
Additionally, Azevedo’s vehicle was towed.
