Man arrested after raping sleeping woman in her apartment Saturday morning
On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, at 6:11 am, the Turlock Police Department and Stanislaus State Police Department were dispatched to a reported sex offense that had just occurred at Park Knolls Apartments, 1100 Pedras Rd, Turlock.
Officers arrived in the area and made contact with the victim who was waiting for officers across the street. She told officers that she had met with two subjects earlier, one of which was Marc Anthony Hughes, 22, of Turlock. Eventually, all three of them made their way to her apartment.
The victim fell asleep and when she woke up, Hughes was sexually assaulting her. The victim quickly got up and left her apartment, calling police in the process.
The victim was able to provide a description of Hughes and at the same time, a suspicious person was reported at The Palms Apartments, 1119 Pedras Rd, that had a similar description of that of Hughes.
A Stanislaus State police officer arrived at The Palms Apartments and located Hughes in the northeast corner of the apartment complex. He was detained in handcuffs for further investigation.
The victim was brought to Hughes and was asked if that was who had sexually assaulted her, which she confirmed it was.
Hughes was arrested and taken to the Turlock Police Department for questioning with detectives who took over the investigation. After questioning, Hughes was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of committing a rape against a person who is incapable of consenting and committing sexual penetration by means of force or fear.
“This case is an example of why we encourage all victims to immediately report crimes to their local law enforcement agencies,” said Turlock Police Sergeant Michael Parmley. “Our police officers were able to quickly respond to the area, locate and arrest the suspect because there was no delay in this crime being reported.”
