Man arrested by sheriff’s canine after robbing gas station and threatening deputies early Monday morning

On Monday, May 15th, 2023, at 2:01 am, a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputy near the intersection of W Monte Vista Ave and N Golden State Blvd, Turlock, observed a man driving a vehicle run a red light and swerve in between lanes at a high rate of speed.

The deputy followed the man, later identified as Joshua McFate, 40, of Pleasanton, northbound on N Golden State Blvd until he pulled into the parking lot of the Arco AMPM at 4700 N Golden State Blvd, believing he was under the influence.

The deputy observed McFate exit his vehicle and enter the business, appearing highly agitated.

McFate had an encounter with the store clerk where property was taken by means of force or fear, however, no weapons were used.

When the deputy attempted to contact McFate to investigate what was going on, he was met with a lack of cooperation. Additional deputies were requested as well as officers from the Turlock Police Department and Stanislaus State Police Department.

Deputies deployed less-than-lethal beanbag rounds to overcome the resistance and effect an arrest, however, McFate continued to be uncooperative and made threatening comments to deputies and officers.

Eventually, a sheriff’s canine was deployed and a successful bite led to McFate’s arrest.

The Turlock Fire Department and American Medical Response were dispatched to check McFate out for the dog bite and some other self-inflicted injuries. He was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital for treatment.

Afterward, McFate was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of attempting to deter or resist an executive officer in the performance of their duty by means of threat or violence and robbery.
