On Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 12:01 am, Turlock Police responded to an aggravated assault that had just occurred at a residence in the 3000 block of Kellogg Ave.
The caller reported that he had confronted a man who appeared to be burglarizing his vehicle and others in the neighborhood. The man then pulled out a knife and tried to stab the caller before fleeing the area.
Officer Kauffman arrived on scene and began his investigation, while other officers saturated the area, looking for the suspected burglar. While searching, a woman from the 2700 block of Brooks Ct called police to report someone was in her backyard.
As Sergeant Lewis arrived on Brooks Ct, he located a man who matched the description provided by the initial caller, walking away from the second caller’s residence. He was detained at gunpoint and identified as Michael Sano, 20, of Turlock. Sano was discovered to be the restrained party in a domestic violence restraining order, on searchable probation for inflicting corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant, and had been flagged as being hostile toward law enforcement.
During an in-field show-up, the initial caller positively identified Sano as who had attempted to stab him. Additionally, a search of Sano’s belongings led to the discovery of a wallet belonging to someone who resided in the 3000 block of Kellogg Ave. Further investigation indicated that Sano had likely stolen said wallet while burglarizing a vehicle.
Sano was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, threatening to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury, and burglary.
